Add and Configure a New Technician

Add a new technician, set their login access, commission rate, service areas, skills, and assigned services.

Written by Sophia Martinez

Technicians are the people who actually do the work in the field. In Joby, each technician has a profile that controls their login access, commission rate, service areas, skills, and the services they're qualified for. This walkthrough covers every field on the new technician form.

1. Open the Technicians page

You'll find Technicians under Settings in the left sidebar. This is where you manage internal staff, external technicians, and subcontractors along with their commission rates.

1

2. Click New Technician

The New Technician button is in the top right of the page. One form covers W2 staff, 1099 contractors, and subs.

2

3. Enter the technician's details

Fill in name, email, and phone number. Email is how they'll log in to Joby. Phone is what shows when they're called by dispatch or a customer.

3

4. Toggle Is User to grant login access

Turn on Is User if this technician should be able to log in to Joby. Joby will create a technician account with the default permissions for that role. You can fine-tune permissions later in Agent Roles.

4

5. Toggle Call Masking

Call Masking is marked (Future Feature) in the app — the toggle is visible but not yet active. When it ships, turning it on will route this technician's calls through a masked Joby number so their personal phone never reaches the customer, and every call stays in Joby for recording. Leave it on if you want this tech included the moment the feature goes live.

5

6. Set the commission percentage

If your team works on commission, enter the technician's percentage in the Commission % field. Joby uses this to calculate their cut automatically on every job they close, and the number flows into your commission reports.

6

7. Assign service areas

Click Select service areas to choose which regions this technician covers. Joby uses this to auto-route jobs based on the customer's address. Add service areas first in Settings if you haven't yet.

7

8. Pick the technician's skills

Select the skills this technician has. The options are pulled from your Job Types (Settings → Service Types), so you're really picking which kinds of jobs this tech is qualified for. When a job is created with a matching service type, only techs with that skill appear in the assignment dropdown.

8

9. Pick the services they cover

This is the same Skills dropdown opened up — pick every job type the tech can handle. The dropdown is sourced from your Service Types, not the Price Book. To add new options here, add new service types in Settings → Service Types first.

9

10. Choose how to send leads outside Joby

If you're sending leads to this technician outside the Joby app — by SMS, email, or both — pick the delivery method here. The technician will get the job details in whichever channels you select.

10

11. Click Create to save

Hit Create and the technician is added. If you turned on Is User, they'll get an invite email with a link to set their password and download the mobile app.
