Team Chat: channels, groups, and direct messages

Talk to your team without leaving Joby. Message everyone at once, create a group for a crew or department, or DM one person directly — all in the same place you already run your jobs.

What it is

Team Chat is internal messaging built into Joby. It's for your team talking to each other — separate from the Conversations Inbox, which is for talking to customers.

Three ways to reach people:

Type

Who sees it

Use it for

Team Channel

Everyone in your company

Company-wide announcements — schedule changes, policy updates, "shop closed Monday."

Groups NEW

Only the members you add

A crew, a department, a job. Sales, Dispatch, the team on a big commercial install.

Direct messages NEW

Just you and one teammate

Quick one-on-one — "can you cover the 3pm?", "customer wants to reschedule."

Note — Team Chat is internal only

Customers never see Team Chat. It's completely separate from the Conversations Inbox where you handle customer SMS, email, and calls. Nothing you write here can reach a customer.

Part 1 — Open Team Chat

1. Click Team Chat

Find Team Chat in your sidebar and click it to open the panel.

1

2. Get oriented

The panel shows everything you have access to:

  • Team Channel at the top — everyone in your company

  • Groups — the private groups you're a member of

  • Direct messages — your one-on-one conversations

The two buttons at the top — New message and New group — are how you start something new.

2

Part 2 — Create a group

3. Click New group

Click New group to open the group builder.

3

4. Pick your members

You'll see everyone on your team. Click each person you want in the group.

4

5. Add as many as you need

Keep selecting teammates. Only the people you add will see the group or its messages — everyone else won't know it exists.

5

6. Click Create group

Name it something your team will recognize — Sales, Dispatch, North Crew, Riverside Install — then click Create group. It appears under Groups for every member immediately.

6

Part 3 — Send a message

7. Type your message

Click into the message field at the bottom and type.

7

8. Click Send

Your message posts to the group instantly. Everyone in it sees it right away.

8

9. Go back to the list

Click the back arrow to return to the main Team Chat panel and see all your channels, groups, and DMs.

9

Part 4 — Send a direct message

10. Click New message

To message one person directly, click New message.

10

11. Pick a teammate

Select the person you want to talk to. The conversation opens right away and lands under Direct messages for both of you — so you always have the history.

11

Manage a group

Open any group and go to Group settings to rename it, add or remove members, leave it, or archive it.

Action

What happens

Rename

Type a new name and confirm. Everyone sees it immediately.

Add member

Click Add and pick teammates. They see history from the point they join.

Remove member

Click the × next to their name. They lose access right away.

Leave group

Removes you only. The group keeps running for everyone else.

Archive

Closes it for everyone and moves it out of the active list. History is kept, not deleted.

The creator

Whoever creates a group is marked as creator and can't be removed by other members. If the creator leaves the company, archive the group and start a fresh one.

Groups worth setting up

Group

Who's in it

What it's for

Dispatch

Dispatchers + office

Live coordination — reroutes, no-shows, emergency calls.

Sales

Estimators + owner

Pricing questions, quote approvals, close/loss updates.

Field crew

All techs

Parts availability, tool sharing, safety notes.

Per-job groups

Everyone on one big install

Multi-day commercial work. Archive it when the job closes.

Tip — keep job-specific talk on the job

If the conversation is about one specific job, use the notes on that job instead. The context lives with the job and whoever picks it up next can see it. Team Chat is best for things that don't belong to a single job.

Things to know

Situation

What happens

Someone joins a group late

They see history from when they joined forward.

You archive a group

It closes for everyone and leaves the active list. Messages are kept.

You leave a group

Only you lose access. A member can add you back.

A teammate is deactivated

They lose access to every group and DM. Their past messages stay visible.

You need the whole company

Use the Team Channel — no group needed, everyone is already in it.

Need help?
