Accept payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone

Turn your iPhone into a card reader. Techs in the field can collect credit and debit payments right from the Joby mobile app — no dongle, no card reader, no extra hardware to lose or forget.

What it is

Tap to Pay on iPhone lets your phone accept contactless card payments directly — the customer taps their credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay on the back of your iPhone and it charges the amount you entered.

Because it's built into iOS and powered by Apple + Joby Pay under the hood, there's no reader to plug in, pair over Bluetooth, or carry around. Tech shows up, does the job, opens Joby on their iPhone, taps to pay, done.

Requirements

iPhone XS or later, running iOS 16.4+
Joby Pay activated on your workspace (that's the Stripe Connect setup — see how to activate if you haven't already)
United States — Tap to Pay on iPhone is currently US-only via Stripe.

Why it matters

  • Get paid on the spot. No more waiting for the customer to click "Pay Now" on the invoice email later. Charge on the driveway before you drive away.

  • Zero hardware overhead. No dongle to lose, no Bluetooth pairing headaches, no extra thing to charge overnight.

  • Better cash flow. Same-day payment beats waiting on ACH or check by 3–7 days.

  • Same processing fees as any other card charge. Money lands in your bank account on Joby Pay's standard payout schedule.

Set it up and use it

All 6 steps happen on the Joby mobile app. First time you use it, iOS will ask you to accept Apple's Terms of Service — one-time thing.

1. Open Settings in the mobile app

In the Joby mobile app, tap the Settings icon.

1

2. Scroll down to Payments

Scroll through the settings list until you see the Payments section.

2

3. Tap Payments

Open the Payments settings.

3

4. Tap Collect

Tap Collect to start a new payment.

4

5. Enter the amount to charge

Type the dollar amount you want to collect. This is the total the customer will be charged — including tax, if applicable.

5

6. Tap "Tap to Pay"

Tap the Tap to Pay button. Your iPhone screen shows a prompt with the amount. Now follow the on-screen instructions:

  • Hold your iPhone within a couple inches of the customer's card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay wallet.

  • The tap happens on the top back of the iPhone (right around the camera area).

  • Wait for the checkmark. That's it — the customer is charged.

6

7. Payment confirmed

iOS shows a success screen once the charge goes through. The payment is immediately logged in Joby against the customer / job / invoice and shows in your Payments report. The customer gets a receipt via SMS or email if you have those set up.

Things to know

Situation

What happens

The customer has Apple Pay or Google Pay on their phone

Works exactly the same — they hold their phone up to yours instead of a card. Faster and cleaner.

The customer only has a magnetic-stripe card (rare in 2026)

Tap to Pay is contactless only. You'd need to send them a Pay Now link instead.

The tap doesn't register

Try again — hold the card right against the top back of the phone (camera area), not the front or bottom. Metal wallets/cases can also interfere.

You need a receipt

Joby auto-generates one and sends via email/SMS if you have the customer's contact info on the record.

You need to refund a Tap to Pay charge

Refund from the Payments page in the app or the web — same flow as any other Joby Pay charge.

Your phone is offline (no signal)

Won't work — Tap to Pay needs an internet connection to authorize the card. Connect to a hotspot or move to signal.

Tip — always ask before you leave the driveway

The best-paying jobs are the ones you close on-site. Once you wrap up, don't say "I'll email you the invoice" — say "I can take payment right now on my phone, tap or swipe." Same-day payment rate on Tap to Pay jobs is dramatically higher than emailed invoices.

Android

Tap to Pay on Android is on the roadmap but not live in Joby yet. Android techs can still take payment on-site by sending the Pay Now link via SMS from the job page — the customer opens it on their own phone and pays with card or Apple/Google Pay.
